Product Description “ I wonder how the book got to Guernsey? Perhaps there is some sort of secret homing instinct in books that brings them to their perfect readers.” January 1946: London is emerging from the shadow of the Second World War, and writer Juliet Ashton is looking for her next book subject. Who could imagine that she would find it in a letter from a man she’s never met, a native of the island of Guernsey, who has come across her name written inside a book by Charles Lamb….
As Juliet and her new correspondent exchange letters, Juliet is drawn into the world of this man and his friends—and what a wonderfully eccentric world it is. The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society—born as a spur-of-the-moment alibi when its members were discovered breaking curfew by the Germans occupying their island—boasts a charming, funny, deeply human cast of characters, from pig farmers to phrenologists, literature lovers all.
Juliet begins a remarkable correspondence with the society’s members, learning about their island, their taste in books, and the impact the recent German occupation has had on their lives. Captivated by their stories, she sets sail for Guernsey, and what she finds will change her forever.
Written with warmth and humor as a series of letters, this novel is a celebration of the written word in all its guises, and of finding connection in the most surprising ways.

Glad I didnt buy this book. March 15, 2010 Genie (Virginia) Boring! I keep waiting for this book to grab me. When I reached the end of the book, I felt cheated by the glowing reviews. The epistolary style was a real turn off. I found the letters trite and lacking in emotion. Perhaps my history background affected my perspective, but I learned nothing new or interesting. The characters were not well developed and the ending predictable. This book was a total disappointment.
Loved this book! March 14, 2010 Irene A lovely romantic book. It took me to a place and time that I did not know that much about, but enjoyed very much learning about. I highly recommend this book!
Perfect rainy-day or weekend read. March 13, 2010 C. Burnett (Phoenix, AZ) I recently purchased this book in an airport before a 4 hour flight, not really knowing anything about the author or any more about the subject matter than the cover and inside covers hinted at. The tone of the book and the letter-style format gently but unwaveringly captivated me. I finished the book shortly after arriving home. After I finished it, I vowed to re-read it immediately, and get copies for two of my relatives (thus, my Amazon purchase). Excellent story. So much information provided in such an unassuming, humble, but entertaining way. I highly recommend it.
P.S. My gift recipients loved it as much as I did.
Quick read March 12, 2010 S. Capps (Edwardsville, IL USA) 0 out of 1 found this review helpful
If you enjoy historical fiction, particularly the WWII era, you will enjoy this book. It is a quick and easy read set up in a letter format. Don't be put off by the somewhat strange title. You will understand once you are into the book.
You cannot help but falling in love with all of the members of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society March 12, 2010 Ladybug (Norway) I loved this book! I laughed and I cried(both of joy and sorrow). The story felt so real and alive, I had to keep reminding myself that it was fiction. You cannot help but falling in love with all of the members of The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society. Now I want to go live in Guernsey and join a Literary Society. I can also say that I know a bit more about what happened at Guernsey during World War II, a period in time that we shouldn't allow ourselves to ever forget.
